| My experience with rye and establishing grass/alfalfa is mixed. It's definitely moisture and rye biomass dependent. The best success here was to terminate the rye with roundup and run a harrow to open up the seed bed. From what I understand rye kills small seeded "weeds" through fumigation. The root exudes and biomass create a gas that kill weeds. Need to stop the rye from making more (terminate) and lightly shatter the crust so gas exchange can happen at a higher rate. Triticale is superior to rye in many ways. | |
