I put on steel over asphalt using 2x4 nailers 22 years ago. It still looks new. The house is two story sticking up where the wind can get a full shot at the roof from all directions. I couldn’t space the nailers at a perfect 24”, I had to vary the spacing a bit to keep the nailers laying flat but nobody knows the difference.
