Subject: RE: Alfalfa

North Dakota
Burning down and no-till seeding is mostly effective in this area.
I am trying to answer the question, can it be done without chemical and fertilizer expenses?
I am going to try, based on the theory that weeds are a constant regardless how much money you spend on trying to eradicate them. I know of no one that has sprayed chemical and eventually achieved a weed free environment and eliminated that cost.
I am going to try to eliminate the cost and see what kind of problems I need to overcome just by using weed suppressing crops. Don't think this can be done with cereal crops but think it is entirely possible on forage crops.
There are some noxious weeds that will still have to be sprayed to control but hoping that cost will be small compared to spraying everything.
A nice stand of alfalfa will be weed free. Getting it established is a challenge, keeping it healthy and productive is a challenge, & making enough profit to pay for this expensive ground is a very big challenge.
Who doesn't like a challenge??
