Massachusetts
We have tried drilling oats into a thin rye stand and result was that the oats didn’t establish due to the growing rye.

We have had success establishing mixed alfalfa/grass stands by harvesting triticale/rye mid May. Waiting a week or 10 days for stubble to green up then killing field with glyphosate. Then go in with no till drill and no till alfalfa grass mix directly into field. No oats, no tillage, no nothing just the seed mix. Stand came out absolutely beautiful very few weeds way less weeds than if we did a traditional spring seeding and so much less hassle and much more feed harvested that year per acre than a traditional Spring seeding. Can post pictures or explain more if you interested.
