North Central Kansas | How many of us have planted a cover crop to graze and been dissatisfied with the results? I'm not hating on diverse cover crops and use some diversity on my farm. I've had better luck with exploiting the traits that are available in Sorghum-Sudan and forages today. Basically I plant PPS Sorghum-Sudan, leave it stand in the field and strip graze it in winter. This concept was born out of necessity and developed on my farm, with my money. It pays out well and all the "Side Effects" are positive.
Biggest impact to your wallet is eliminating harvest costs which can easily exceed $100/acre. It's regenerative because the cow spreads manure and urine even across the field for free. Most years I get 100 cow days per acre. That's running 50 cows on 50 acres for more than 3 months. This is truly a concept that's been hiding in plain sight. I just felt dumb I didn't figure this out sooner. If you are looking for ways to cut costs and manage your cow herd better, this is an easy one. I drive by many farms with a patch of feed right by the house, baled or chopped. I can take any questions to help you through.
