Subject: RE: Losing 2 Ash trees to borers

southern MN
Don’t know about there.

Elm used to be big here. Well that ended, just got through round 3 of Dutch Elm, took the last 2 big elm that survived the first 2 rounds. haven't gone through the grove to see if any other big elm survive, but wouldn’t be many. Have a few dozen young ones going strong for the moment, but…

I see bark discoloring on dozens of ash in the grove this spring, after several large ones dying last year. So they will be gone in 2 years.

Used to hear of oak wilt, don’t know if that is still a thing, but really haven’t seen many plant oaks any more?

Everyone has been planting maple. Maple maple maple. We have its poor cousin in our area as well, the box elder.

If anything hits maple trees, going to be a scorched earth here. I kind of hesitate to plant maples for that reason. There isn’t much diversity left.

Hackberry seem like nice trees, have a few dozen smaller ones coming up in the grov. Ironwood is an ok tree, have a few going in the grove as well.

We have several dozen black walnut growing here and there. Awful for mowing the lawn, but nice trees.squirrels love my place. Have 2 butternuts, they are not strong trees.

A few red cedar, nice to see some evergreen. They don’t compete well with the hardwoods.

Pine do not like my dirt.

Spruce sort of tolerate the dirt, but only a couple in the drier ground.

Lot of these evergreens don’t like the salt spray from the solutions used to melt the highways here, so can’t use them near a road.

Kind of puts us back to hackberry and ironwood mixed in with the big soft maples we have here.
