That is NOT what they were originally. Back when engines were actually good, and guys fixed their own equipment, it was a great option for a million mile, wornout, beat to death over the road truck that had been well-maintained. Say you had a truck with 1.5 million on it, you had replaced engine, trans, rear ends, but truck was used up. Or, you end up hitting a deer or jackknifing on a icy road. Buy a glider, swap everything over, you have a new truck.

It was abused and that's why it went away.
