North Dakota | It is like the guy from Montana. We get one and occasionally 2. My intention is to take it early and figure a way to get the 2nd growth into the ground as an attempt to eventually improve the ground quality which should make a better 1st cutting.
After about 5 years alfalfa around here starts going down hill and mostly should be rotated out. My quest/dream/wish is to try and turn that trend around and never seed again. They say anything is possible but I don't believe that. I have been waiting about 6 years for 2 of my fingers to grow back and so far it does seem impossible, it is also impossible for me to be a girl.
I think if a few alfalfa plants can last 20 years there must be a way to make them all last that long. Probably a fools errand but it makes me interested in something being semi-retired.
The weavils will get less by me disking the old plant under every year. Think it's possible if I can do it before it starts to grow for the summer.
I have never considered that alfalfa may be limited by how many times it is cut. Thanks!! I will ponder that.
