Subject: RE: Alfalfa

Some comments/ questions:

1) You mention 2 cuts. Is that how many cuttings you typically get in a year?  I live in PA, and we typically get 4 or 5 cuttings per year. I realize you probably get less cuttings since you are further north.  But that just caught me by surprised that you would just get 2 cuttings. Is that correct?

2) If we have alfalfa weevil, we will be spraying it.  Spraying for weevils is not expensive. In fact, that cost of application is more than the cost of the product. So, if you had weevils last year, maybe you want to be watching for them again this year, and spray when they start showing up. Give it some thought.

3) You mention high quality. That is what we see.  Cutting before blooms will decrease yield but improves quality.  So, what you are noticing is what we see as well. For dairy quality alfalfa, the quality is important. For beef cows, maybe you can give up a bit of quality to get more yield. That is the trade-off.

4) I have heard of guys using Aer-way on alfalfa. Not sure if I agree with doing it or not, but it sounds like you are doing something similar.
