Subject: RE: PVC pipe mess up

NW Ohio,near Findlay
Benn following this post and your other post AR. In the day, SDR was just used, yes because it was good quality, but newer pipe is not. It was used because it was cheaper, was considered construction grade material. The big box stores sells mostly construction grade pipe now, we all buy it. However some things aren't the same. PVC in 1 1/2 and 4 inch, look at the ends of it when buying. It should be solid plastic, some will have, will call it a soft, foam filled center, sooth inside and outside, but noticeably lighter in weight. If you compare the printed numbers on the pipe with the good stuff, if is different. Also the cheap PFC has more flex. Back to modern day SDR, sorry to say, is not the same as the older stuff. Must be the China syndrome.
Waterlines, glue or more flexible fittings, barbed with clamp or O'Ring. I have seen it all, some glue fitting will last long time, but many fail. It has to be a location, ground type thing. In southern climates, extreme temperature changes in air and ground are not a problem. However in Ohio they are. In the past, old cast iron water mains were a constant problem. Mid winter, ground not froze much yet, get a extreme cold night, maybe two or three days in a row. Water tower in city, will start to freeze on outside, and all water is near freezing in tower. Come morning, everybody up, flushing toilets, lots of cold water flowing into warmer ground, snaps the case iron mains. You can follow the lines, first to break are near the water tower. We were always on alert for breaks in water lines when this weather pattern happens. Our excavation company had a full time job on small towns where the water systems were installed back in WPA days. One section of water line had more repair couplers than line.
Same thing happens on farm lines too, warmer water from well will stress any type of line if ground colder than water. Again, must be a location thing, ground type. I still dig up lines for repair, if leak near well, most likely plumber used plastic connector screwed into pit less adapter instead of brass one. I got by for years. Water hydrant, same thing, plastic connector, lots of plastic tees go bad in time. Once in a while we will have a copper line fail, a pin hole leak in the cheaper grade copper, off hand can't remember the thinner grade, think it is L grade instead of K.
