The biggest challenge or question is would the transmission be able to function even in a manual mode as a basic power shift if it saw no engine?

Short answer is not easily. Would need to swap the electronic clutch pressure control valves for manual valve bodies and create a manual valve control to cut oil flow to the off-going clutch pack(s) and simultaneously send oil to the on-coming clutch pack(s) to shift through the entire gear range.

A related conundrum is why didn't Deere ever take the 50-series powershift and put it in a 50-70 series 4WD tractor. That is one of my dream reengineering projects that will never get done. Suppose it was back in the day of put the QuadRange in a gear and use the two-speed for headlands or tough spot plowing was good enough. Not many farmers back then needed a 4WD with powershift on a grain cart.
