Subject: RE: Sunflowers in Iowa/MN

I tried some last year. Planted 2 week of June. 6 rows of a planter to make just under a half an acre. Forget exactly what i planted but was an oil seed type. Made just over 700 lbs i think. It was one my worst ground and some did get run through the chopper as I needed the room to make the corners when cutting silage. Combined October 16th with a 643 corn head. Lots of head loss and the stalks were still green and super stringy and bunched up on the head. Had best luck running as fast as possible in 2nd gear, which is ~6mph. I really regretted planting it in the curviest part of the field as I've never combined 6mph.

I fed mine to some pigs and they sure liked it. Gave em a bit of shine. Would not mind trying sunflowers again, but I need to get something that matures earlier or a row crop head. Trying to combine those with the corn head made for a long 45 minutes.
