I have recommended this strategy for years. There are always weather risks & weather risks from multiple angles (including loss and the ability to apply). Making sure that you have nutrition through the full growth and development is critical.

Just a step back in time - going back to the 90’s, we were doing a lot of strip till in Nebraska. Most of the nitrogen went on as fall anhydrous. Other nutrition went on as a banded starter - either two by two or in furrow. I started recommending spring nitrogen and broadcasting 70% of additional nutrient needs. Cost per ton of nitrogen changes from fall to spring didn’t matter - we were raising 40-60 bushels more with the improved application timing and fewer fall harvest intactness problems. Managing full season works. Good agronomy - always pays.
