I believe corn benefits when there is more than one form, in more than one position.
If all your N is down as NH3, and you have a cold wet spring, the gas is deep and slow converting. Corn won't be short of applied N, but may have a stint of low available N. In this case having some shallow N down as UAN/AMS would feed early needs until NH3 is converted into a useable form and a root finds it.
Similarly, all N applied as UAN or urea close to the surface is subject to denitrification if it turns wet and warm during the season and may lead to a deficiency late in the year...
