Subject: Sunflowers in Iowa/MN

Latimer Iowa
Does anyone have experience with sunflowers in northern Iowa or southern Minnesota? Is there the possibility of doing them as a double crop after a small grains? We could get 100 days after small grains harvest before a killing freeze and looking for ideas. Is there quality concerns with a double crop vs a full season crop? These would be sunflowers for oil. I have a 2160 case 30" planter or a 1910/1890 deere seeder with 7.5's or 15's to plant with? Have a Macdon draper or a drago 30" corn head, would either of those work? What type of yields? I do have a market for them already.

If we mess with them would want to grow 500,000 lbs to make it worth while, guessing that around 250 acres?

I know nothing about growing them except my wife had a patch that required constant weeding and the blew down when mature.
