Tires aren't shorter, they are narrower.



The missing (and very important) detail is what the sidewall ratio of the old tires was and what it is on the new tires.

If they have the same sidewall ratio, they’d also be shorter (smaller rolling circumference).



If I'm reading this correctly, the aspect ratio is 85% for the metric equivalent and the rolling circumference is around 10 inches less for the 16.9.

Approx. 5% difference in rolling circumference sounds like a lot to me.
