Subject: RE: Ditch drainage issue due to nipsco gas pipeline running through ditch

Crawfordsville, Arkansas
hobby farmer IN - 3/20/2025 12:49

There was a farmer installing tile above a commercial gas line that was supposed to be at least a foot below his grade, and the crater left from where the line ruptured was unbelievable. The only solace was that the operator never knew what hit him.

Call 811, then call the gas company. Way too risky to trust that it was installed "deep enough"

Don't know much about drain tile other than what I've learned here but wasn't there a farmer in Indiana a few years ago who thought he hit a rock so he hooked up another tractor in front of his plow and tore through the line? I remember seeing pics and it looked like a missile had hit him. Huge hole in the ground and everything, including the men, burned completely up.

I call the state locator number every time I do any dirt moving or digging. Its free and they come and mark everything. Had to dig a drainage ditch close to a Union Pacific main line and called them years ago. Had 4 or 5 different companies come out and locate their lines. I was far away enough from everything except a MCI fiber optic cable and it was 5 feet deep so I was good there also. But if I had hit it without calling I would have been on the hook to pay repairs and it was an astronomical number he told me.
