When I lay a plane on its side I make sure the blade is opposite of work area. Nothing like carelessly rubbing your knuckle against a hardened and honed blade edge. Will remove 1/8” of flesh much easier than wood;-)
Maybe that is why some people lay it blade side down. For safety concerns.
