Subject: Coal ash and rare earth elements

Lots of coal ash around and it contains about 200 to 500 milligrams of rare earths per kilogram. Readily accessible with recovery rate of 30 to 70 percent depending on origin of the coal with eastern (Appalachian) coal having higher concentrations but lower recovery rate compared to western (Powder River) coal with lower concentrations but higher recovery rate. Make for less dependence on China for rare earth elements.
