Altoona, WI | If you think that is bad, the heat shield on the crew capsule on the Artemis test flight showed way more degradation than it should have. It is supposed to burn off evenly to dissipate heat on re-entry. It was chunking off instead of burning off. That is bad because an uneven heat shield actually creates more heat, exacerbating the problem. This could result in a crew loss similar to the Shuttle that broke up on re-entry. NASA is well aware of it. is under pressure to get back to the moon, and has no current plan to fix the problem before the next flight, which will be manned.
