Many years ago in high school shop class I was taught to lay a plane on its side but the reason why was never explained to us. The only valid reason I can think of is the blade might go cockeyed if the plane was set down or dropped hard on the bench. The blade is hard steel so how can the cutting ability of the blade be affected by setting it down on a wood surface?
