just a tish NE of central ND | We had a pay phone at school. All calls to parents would have been local calls..... SPORTS Kids regularly called parents, and the call didn't go through without money. No caller ID back then either. No cell phones... The parents phone just clicked off and went to dial tone. The parents in turn would call the pay phone number on their home phone as the student stood and waited for the return call to come in and talk with their parents.
BACK in the day,,,,, And I mean about 1976, I remember visiting the local minister's home one Sunday evening. The Ministers we hired had to pay for non-business long distance, but the parish paid for the local access and business long distance on his home and church phone. The LUTHERAN minister's son (John I think) was in college and Dad and his son devised a way of calling back home to tell his parents he made it ok and safely back to college. If he needed help, he called collect and asked for the reverend and he accepted the call charges. If he just wanted to tell his parents he got home ok and all was well and he made it fine John made a collect call to the parsonage and asked for himself...(is John there?). Nope John was not there, he left for college. so, no charge.
Praise the lord! HA!
