If it is sand it probably won't hurt.

If it is heavy ground with some clay it will be harmful. If you do it in the fall before winter it will generally kill it. Water sits in the ruts and alfalfa can't take that. Any late harvest that leaves tracks is poison on heavy ground. A few years ago anything drove on in August was dead the next spring.
