It's not possible for these tarrifs to be bad for both sides. One side will benefit from it.
That is your take on it. I would say it is clearly possible to be bad or have negative ramifications for both sides. For example if a tariff paid on a product (say potash fertilizer) makes it more expensive for an importer, say (US farmer) I would say that it is negative for the US farmer. The increased cost will likely result in reduced demand for the product, and the producer, in this case the mine in Canada, will suffer a loss of demand and revenue. Not sure where the benefit accrues to, unless possibly the US Treasury. Maybe there is more than two sides. |
