| Reagan's Quips On Farm Crisis Draw Sparks

President Reagan, already in trouble with farmers, put his foot in it at a dinner Saturday night, and then stepped in it again Monday.
What was meant as a quip in a supposedly "off the record" speech at the annual dinner of the Gridiron Club appeared to be gaining momentum as a controversy.
During remarks at the end of the dinner, held by a group of Washington newspaper correspondents and attended by top government figures, Reagan referred to the farm crisis and quipped, "I think we should keep the grain and export the farmers."
There were groans in the audience.

reagan wasn`t exactly a "pro farmer" . i don`t know if it was a record amount of farmers that went broke under reagan, but it was a lot. and the greedy survivors from the reagan failed farm policy got their debt wrote off. that`s the root of the farm problems today.
all that said about reagan, he probably was one of the better modern presidents... not a very high bar to clear. | |
