West Central IA | I had always calved in mid-April to end of May. It was a struggle for me with planting and mud and sometimes get a snow in there too. Then came the scours after the calves were stressed from cold and mud. Changed to late May calving and wow was that an eye opener. Last year we calved 11 heifers and only had to get 1 in because its head was back, and she couldn't get him out. Otherwise, it went soo much better than early spring calving. If you weren't sure if a calf had nursed, you get him in the chute, and it is 70 out so even if it had rained it was not cold. I have had heart trouble and just can't do the things I used to do so I have to do things easier. As long as you have shade for your cows during breeding, I don't think the temps will be that big of an issue. But you gotta have shade. | |
