Bethel, PA | A few years ago, I thought tie stall barns were the way to go as well. But after milking with 80 cows and the tie stall barn and 40 in a free stall barn, I have come to realize how much more labor efficient a free stall barn is. Also, I don't think tie stalls are better for cow comfort anymore. They may have been better for individual cow care long ago, but with the technology available today, free stall barns are better.
If you have to build a tie stall make it wide enough for drive-through feed alleys so that it could be converted to free stalls or parlor and holding area later. | |
