Shenandoah Valley, VA | We are a few hours north of you in the Shenandoah Valley. Biggest concern I’d have with calving in May is you’ll be breeding back during typically the hottest part of the year and when fescue can be at its worst. That may not impact other parts of the country, but definitely something to consider for those of us in VA depending on how you manage your grass.
Not specifically what you are considering, but we moved to mainly fall calving many years ago and it works well for us. Calve in typically nice weather, breed back in November-December, and run pairs on fall stockpile usually up into January. Yes, can take more hay to feed pairs than bred cows over winter, but with the stockpile and rotational grazing we typically only have to feed 3-4 months. Then sell the calves on the spring grass market. | |
