west central Iowa | We start calving first of April. We have hilly pastures that we save to calve on. Mostly Brome, Big Bluestem, and a little Switchgrass. The tall grasses give the calves a place to lay, out of the wind or snow. Cows can come to fence line bunks in a lot for feed and water. We do check everything twice a day with a gator. Important for us to be able to bring a heifer up with 2 gators if she needs attention. They usually come up fairly easily because we heading them towards feed and water. We do not have a scours problem. I got really tired of dealing with cold mud in March! I don’t have a problem shutting planter down to do chores at night. I have friends that can not stop the planter though, so I understand. We feed out our own cattle so we not trying to meet a size and date at the salebarn.
