East of Broken Bow | After a certain date, we put everything out to pasture. Even the first calf heifers unless they look 'close' get let out onto green grass.
My dad has been raising cows since the 1950s, I took over after he retired, and between the two of us, we can only think of one instance of losing a heifer or cow that couldn't calve on their own.
I can think of several that were in the lot that didn't make it, even after a C-section at the vet. I am definitely of the opinion that cattle on green grass for any length of time will calve easier unassited than ones that are in a lot. For the heifers, if they look like they will calve in a week or two, we keep them shut, but if they are a ways off by pasture time, they go to pasture. Never lost one calving, and the calf loss seems to be no worse than ones born in the lot. | |
