Subject: Calving in Lot VS on Pasture

Was talking to some buddies the other night over a beer or 15,and got on the topic of dry lotting cows during calving season. On our farm we shoot for a Mid April-Mid May calving window, We turn bulls in the 4th of July and calve on green pasture and in the timber, the downfall i see is thats right during Planting season and we dont always get calves tagged, we keep a pretty good eye on them but dont seem to always catch those few day old calves that were born in the back of the timber. THey argued that we could be losing calves due to not always seeing them born and if theres complications we dont see it. My question for them was "Whats the difference of losing one in the pasture vs having one drown in the muddy water, get stepped on and fight scours/naval infections?" I understand that noone wants to lose a 1000$ calf but truly whats the difference?? I guess everyone does things different. This is what works for us. Any thoughts on this?
