SW OH | So I finally got the oil sample results back on that truck and the new oil. One of the first numbers to look at is total base number. It's a compiled measurement of the additive package. Our new oil starts out at 9.4, and 3 is the lowest acceptable number. The individual numbers from the truck are similar to new oil. Iron is up 1 PPM, with 99 being the acceptable high. So after 3 years, 2 miles, and probably an excessive amount of idle time, the oil in this truck is still good as new.
I hear a lot of comments about we don't change our oil often enough, because it's dirty. I'm often surprised that so few people know why oil needs changed. For engine oil, it has nothing to do with being dirty. That's what the air and engine oil filter are for. Oil needs changed when the additives have been consumed. The 2 biggest problems that the additives counter is acid and getting thicker. When the additives are depleted the acid is not good for machined surfaces, and thicker oil is harder to pump, has less lubricity.
If I rotate the pictures, it chops off the top and bottom.
