Thumb of Michigan | IDK your location, but with RB baleage, you would make smaller bales. I've experiment with my plain RB. It's a 5x5 and with a 4' x 5' bale that I made in the beginning of November, the bales averaged almost 2200# at 68% moisture. I just fed the one bale I kept over the summer (15-month storage outside, individually wrapped). The cow ate it before the 38% moisture stuff that I'm presently feeding. Naturally smaller bales would be less efficient with the amount of plastic to wrap. But you would need to feed them faster as the weather is warmer (location again). I don't feed in the warmer months, but I need a 30-40% moisture bale gone in 5-7 day with freezing temps.
Is high quality, rotational grazing a possibly in your area? Then you could look at New Zeeland type dairy (9 months of milking, 3 months of all dry cows). | |
