Wallis, TX
Hill country west of Austin is nice. Several caves in area, Inner Space north of Austin, Wonder Cave San Antonio, one in San Marcus. from central Texas you are only 4 or 5 hours from almost any terrain you could want. Desert in the west, lots of open land in the panhandle, piney woods in the east, brush country in the south and the Gulf of Mexico. If you go to Port Aransas come back to Austin along the coast then either go th Houston and up 290 to Austin or jsut catch 71 and go back to Austin you'll see quite a bit of different country.

I definatley would stay out of Mexico, especially the border towns unless you have some kevlar underware! 3000 people killed in Jaurez last year alone.
