Advancing timing would put the injector squirt earlier in the compression stroke. There's not as much heat when advanced as waiting to add fuel later in the stroke, with higher cylinder temperature, for easier starting. Advancing the injection would provide more time for the air-fuel to mix, providing a more complete burn and less emissions. It's all a balance, nothing's free.
