Middlesex County, Ontario | Here in Canada we "got rid of the penny" in 2012.
Electronic transactions like debit, credit, gift card are the same. There is no rounding for those transactions, it's still $0.49.
Cash gets rounded to the nearest 5c. 48c gets rounded up to 50c. 47c gets rounded down to 45c. The rounding happens at the end total of the bill. If you buy 100 items that are 47c each, the total would be $47.00.
The penny is still a valid coin to use even today. They just aren't making any more and the bank won't give you any. I found some pennies at the bottom of a change jar last fall and paid with them. There's no rounding if you can produce pennies and pay exact change.
I'd imagine that's how the US will handle it as well? |
