Back in the DJI Phantom 2 days there was no software limit. We took a fresh battery and went straight up. I don't remember the number but I know well past 5000' we hit clouds, couldn't see anymore, and chickened out to go any further. Had plenty of battery left. Not a very safe thing to do.
