Subject: RE: McFarlane HDL-1100 vs Great Plains CT 8300 harrow

St. Joseph, Champaign County, IL
We ran a McFarlane HDL1138-66 for one spring. The Great Plains CT8300 we had ordered, didn't get in on time, so we bought the McFarlane to get us by.

One thing we like better about the GP over the MF, is the way the chains that lift the harrow when folding, attach to what I'd call the arms. Looking online just now, it appears MF has changed their way of doing this connection, for the better, but I'm still thinking I like GP's method better. On the MF we had, the attachment brackets could get bent easily if you turned too short.

The MF was only 12 bars, thus the 66 in the model number. The GP is 16 bars, so it does a better job leveling the previous fall's chiseled ground well enough we can spray, but that should be expected. The MF was 40' and the GP is 60'. When folded the GP has plenty of tongue weight, and is long enough with the wheels at the back, we have to pay attention navigating some of the turns and field entrances we have.

Other than the chain fastening issue above, can't really say anything bad about the McFarlane, but only running it for the one spring we didn't cover that many acres.
