Russian dictator Nikita Kruschchev visited the Garst farm in Coon Rapids in September 1959. I gave a report on my radio show this week. I was 10 years old and remember the visit but I'm sure many agtalkers have memories. In 1959 was the height of the Cold War, he was considered the enemy. He had a relationship with Roswell Garst thus the visit to his farm. Anyone have memories?
From what I read, this was before the cuban crisis, u2, and all, the general opinion was that relations were thawing slightly.
When he got back, then shortly after the U2 was shot down and everything went down hill. |
