Agree with you c_mayer.. I know many auction houses have bumped the rates little in the last few years because there has been plenty to sell and plenty of buyers but at the same time if you wine they normally will lower there% rate for the seller a little.
I like our local auction locations and they do use the internet bidding with premiums but can bid in person without paying extra fee so best of both worlds in my eyes. I don't like that it seams the rep of the internet auctions normally change frequently but we have to understand the auction company has to keep them pushing to make them their money and the person normally uses it for a fill in job or meet local farmers for a foot in the door.
ITS all about reading the FINE PRINT before bidding but NEED to understand what they charge , how they take bids, how to take delivery, etc. It's not that hard to figure the added premium while bidding ( most are 10% anyway).. I've baught most of my equipment off the internet bidding because I don't have the time or think it will bring too much so don't go but bid online and buy cheap enough..
Right, if you are the sole seller, you can typically negotiate on the rate DEPENDING on what you are asking of the auctioneer. If they are doing all the marketing, cleanup, pictures, descriptions, and answering phone calls, don't expect them to drop their rates much, but if you are willing to do some of the leg work, then you can likely get a commission reduction.
The mailing list is one of the main reasons a particular auctioneer or another has more value than others might have...if it's not getting advertised heavily, you're losing potential bidders
