I did a couple underground water lines last year. I used 160 psi black poly. One was a 300' run and the other was 1600'. Both 1".

The 300' run was to replace some 100 psi black poly that was put in too shallow around 1960. 60 years old! I think it would have lasted longer if it was 160 psi. All the galvanized that was put in around that time was replaced 30 years ago.

I like to back fill with a little bit of sand on top of the poly.

I have some 160 psi poly on top of the ground for pasture water that was done in 1994. Gets run over with tractor and brushhog every year. Only place that failed was the PVC valves I installed at each tank. I would not use PVC for a water line.
