Well said, Chris. The old Agtalk mentality that all auctioneers are crooked and greedy.
For someone to say:
It's a gimmick
They fool people into bidding
Don't look at sale bills anymore because of buyers fees
Just exposing the fact that you're not "thinking it through"
Anyone farming today knows numbers and how to use a calculator.
If they're all crooks how come none are in jail and why aren't they insanely rich?
The rich ones work like dogs, just like every other "lucky, rich" person.
A friend of ours in Bismarck had a sizeable car/pickup collection to sell. He got ahold of Mechums and the owner and his son flew from Florida to Bismarck to look at each vehicle and guaranteed him a very respectable figure before the auction.
He said they were just common guys that were straight shooters.
I would say the same thing about any dealings I have had with a Mecum auction on the Ag side...they didn't know tractors, but they knew the people to bring on board for their "Gone Farming" auctions that knew enough to get the listings done with decent information, and get the auction done.
I'd say the same of a LOT of auctioneers though, I know quite a few personally, and I'm betting most do charge a buyers premium, and I would consider them both successful AND honest. Do they have nice things, maybe to some folks, but to others they likely live fairly conservative.
It takes work to be successful in almost every profession, and typically, the amount of work is proportional to the reward...sure there are exceptions, but the percentage of get rich quick schemes that are successful are pretty small.
