NW IL | I agree with this. Not enough info on a plot sheet to make good use of it. Across our acres we have deep black loam, 2 types of timber clay, and 2 types of sandy loam. Not to mention different Ca:Mg ratios, different OM, variable drainage, etc.
I rarely use plot data to make hybrid selection. Most often I read up aa much as I can about agronomy characteristics. Like how drought tolerant, how well it does on marginal soil, can it take wet feet, etc.
I had high hopes for FBN's seed selection tool, but I don't think they ever captured the data needed to make it work. I could select a field, it would look at soil types, then tell me top hybrids for each soil type based on other users past yield data. Too many variables between operations to work as well as I hoped, but I was excited about the potential when it came out. | |
