Thanks for all the ideas. The frozen concrete waterer has been fairly trouble free for almost 20 years. Evidently the thermostatically controlled heat tape that wraps around the down tube figured it was time to die. With the recent string of below zero weather the down tube under the waterer froze solid. Cattle drained the available water leaving the bowl heat element dry and it died also. I've got what I think is a 300 gal rubber tank which fits inside the guardrail watering station and fortunately there is a working Iowa hydrant just outside the guardrail along with an electric outlet. Filling the tank twice a day isn't really too difficult when I use the Ranger to bring a short length of warm hose down from the garage. Temperature is in the 40's today and warm stretch predicted. So I think I'll just use the rubber tank for awhile and see if the down tube thaws. It may be spring before it thaws naturally but for now I'll just use the tank while cows are in this pasture which has access to a corral and loading ramp. Later I can move them to another pasture if filling the tank gets to be too much. I did put a heat lamp under the waterer without success as heat was just rising out of the empty bowl area. Thanks again for the ideas. I could run a hose and fill the 12" vertical culvert under the waterer but I'm afraid of it all freezing again. Probably time to change waterers this summer.
