We have a Cobett with 10 cows in northern Illinois. I check it every morning when it's cold, and keep a rubber mallet in the fence nearby. When it gets close to zero at night, I usually have to break the ice and throw out the chunks. Keep it no higher than 22" above the surface and bury the water line 5' deep or more depending on location. They are pretty simple otherwise.
