Mid MO | Btdt!
I didn't unroll hay. Rather, I fed it in rings arranged in a contour to the draws. Piled and burned what I could prior to the hay treatment. Jammed sumack and persimmon trash in the washes to slow the water. You'll have a great weed crop and a little grass the first year, don't sweat it. Just let it go and cover the soil. Mow it high around Aug 4 if you can.
The following year, you will have nice grass. You've got to build the dirt prior to seeding anything. There's seed in the soil bank waiting for the right condtions to sprout. I'd broadcast lespedeza next spring.
It takes a full year for all the needles and such from the cedars to clear out of the soil. Meanwhile, the dung, urine, and hay have to compost and the soil has to start to rebuild. The dirt in those cedar lots resembles the in-field of a baseball field. | |
