NEMO | We are using a dozer, trackhoe, skidloader and fire.
Last summer had the best dozer guy around make quick work of a bunch of cedars and scrub brush. Popped them out and pushed to the nearest ravine. He also pushed up a bunch of brush I took out earlier with the trackhoe. Cleaned up 60 to 80 acres (hard to measure for sure) in around 100 hours. We hit it with a Sunflower VT, spread wheat, then hit again with the VT. Plan to seed alfalfa, clover, fescue, orchard grass and timothy this spring on the acres too steep to farm.
Previously I've been cutting a bunch of cedars off with the skidloader and a brush hog (stumps) or the tree plucker(slow). This winter I've been randomly working with the track hoe. Will smooth up when I get the dozer guy back or I'll run the skidloader and blade then start VT disking when weather allows.
I prefer the dozer and trackhoe over brush hogging off the cedars and having stumps left. This ground is pretty dang steep in a lot of places and the pictures don't do the steepness justice. Hired hand that was running the VT with a 2 track and the self propelled spreader said he was half scared half of the time.
Kind of like a hog barn, I bought myself a job! Hope to have most of it cleared in 3 years. Have some logs we want to cut this winter but so far the weather hasn't been fit to log in the hills.
