West Central Illinois | Have about 4 acres of solid cedar im clearing with just a chainsaw and stacking piles. Have done this a lot on the home farm over the years but never this thick a stand. The other patches at least had fescue and broom sedge in between trees. Was figuring on unrolling and feeding hay here for a week or 2 next year once piles are burnt. But what can a guy do this growing season to get some cover on these hills? There's absolutely no grass or even weeds under these cedars. I've heard lespedeza likes poor soil but is this too poor? What about annual ryegrass or oats? Too many stumps to be able to work any of it and it's quite steep so will be limited to broadcast.
