Subject: Re: MAGNUMS 72, 89, or MX Series

I bought my first new 7120 in '87 and since have own another 7120, a 7220, & a 7240. All were good tractors & the 7240 was probably the best tractor we have ever owned.

We traded the 7240 for a '01 MX240. Worst trade we ever made. Only thing the 240 had going for it was the quiet cab but in every other aspect the 7240 was a much better tractor. We ran the 240 for 18 monthes & traded for an '01 8310. The 8310 was an improvement over the 240 but still wasn't the tractor the 7240 was.

Traded the 8310 for a new MX 275 in Jan. We did get to demo the 275 last fall for a couple days. Seems to be much improved other the 240s but time will tell.

Back to your question. WE used the 7120s & 7220 to pull a 12/23 Kinzie. They made nice planter tractors yet have enough hp that we used them as a 2nd tillage tractor when needed.

I will agree with the other poster that the early Magnums had more power than the later ones, at least in the 71 series. Our first 7120 dynoed 185 hp, 2nd one was a dog so we had it dynoed - only 157 hp (rated). CIH service manager sent the injector pump in & had everything set a "high factory specs". We they put the pump back on it dynoed at 187hp and warranty was still intact because the pimp waswithin factory specs. No doubt this was what CIH did with the first Magnums so they would be "hot" when dealers took them out to demostrate to a farmer, especially ones that had green tractors. The 7240 was turning 236 hp when the dyno broke & hadn't reached peak hp yet. The 7220 was never on a dyno but would pull anything the 71s pulled a gear faster so it was up there. BTW, I might mention that all these tractors were all dynoed on the same dyno & by the same person so the hp settings should be relative as I know there is a lot of differences between dynos & even between different operators on the same dyno.
