Chebanse, IL..... | Long time ago, people with airplanes converted most oil pan plugs to quick drains. You always safety wired the valve handle in the closed position. We often do the same with QD's if the oil pan is close to the ground. In most cases you can either use SS safety wire, or good/strong black ty-wraps. If there's no hole in the handle you can drill one. Either remove the rubber cover or drill through it also. Or, you can take a SS hose clamp of the proper size & wrap it around so it holds the handle in the locked position.
It's still easier to undo any of those added safety things than to drain with a conventional oil pan plug. Plus, if you want to catch a sample, it's easy to do with a QD. You might want to use one of those clear plastic drinking cups to catch a sample from an engine that's been sitting for at least a couple hours & check for water/anti-freeze. If there's water in the oil, it will settle in the absolute bottom of the pan. |
